The obvious hope with a building and pest inspection in Shorncliffe is that the report will come back clean, and you will purchase your dream home and live there happily ever after. But even in the case of a clean report, how can you make sure that your sound housing investment stays a sound housing investment? Specifically, how can you prevent termite infestations and the catastrophic damage they can do to a house?
Three Tips for Preventing Termite Problems in Your Home
We often hear the termite prevention question at 360 Building & Pest Inspection, and while we aren’t exterminators, we can provide a few tips on how you can keep your home termite and pest-free following purchase. Here are three golden rules to get you started:
- Keep your firewood a safe distance away from the house: Termites are often spread to new buildings through firewood. If your house has a wood burning stove or fireplace, or if you have an outdoor fire pit, you might also have a woodpile on premises. You don’t have to stop burning wood entirely to avoid termites, but you should keep that woodpile a fair distance away from your house. Experts normally recommend six metres of distance, at least, between house and firewood pile.
- Look out for moisture or leaks: Termites thrive off moisture, so making sure your home is a dry environment—free of any leaking pipes, windows, AC units or faucets—is a good preventative step to keep termites out of your home. At 360 Building & Pest Inspections, all of our building and pest inspections include free thermal imaging, which—among other things—is great for finding leaks, moisture and water damage.
- Make building inspections an annual habit: A building or pest inspection isn’t just something you do before you buy a house and never again. On the contrary, at 360 Building & Pest Inspections, we recommend that our customers contact us annually for repeat checkups. We can check your foundation, your walls, the wooden components of your home and a variety of other areas for signs of infestation. By taking these precautionary measures annually, you will hopefully be able to catch any termite infestation before it causes too much damage to your property.
